Representative of Nazi scientific testing, on October 3, 1942, Germany successfully launched the V-2 Rocket, the 1st man-made object to reach space. The object was a ballistic missile, launched as military defense mechanisms against Allied targets during WWII. The development of the V-2 rocket was the most expensive industrial project of the Third Reich, with the Nazis hoping to use it as the most advanced rocket of WWII. Fortunately, the ballistic missile was never used in combat, though was influential in the development of similar weapons throughout the Cold War period.
