Established in 1636, on September 23, 1642, Harvard College held its first commencement exercises, graduating a select group of Puritan ministers for service throughout New England. The original university model mirrored that of England, with strict adherance to classic academic courses, under the jurisdiction of Puritan colonists in the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Although not particularly linked to any specific religious denomination, Puritan ideals remained part of the Harvard academic curriculum throughout the 17th century. Harvard remains significant for being the oldest institution of higher learning in the United States.
