Nazis invade Poland beginning WWII in Europe.

Beginning a global conflict, on Sept. 1, 1939, Nazi Germany invaded Poland, a demonstration of their increased military superiority.  In the days following the invasion, several allied nations, including the United Kingdom and Australia, declared war on Germany.  The event was unexpected, especially given British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlin's attempt at appeasing Adolf Hitler and maintaining peace in Europe.  The failed agreement of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact angered the Soviet Union, who entered the war against Germany.
