Beginning almost 20 years as the most famous anchorman in the world, on August 31, 1963, Walter Cronkite was appointed the anchor for the half-hour CBS Evening News program, the first to offer a half-hour, nightly news program. He was considered among the most trusted figures in the United States, covering such historical occurrences as the Cuban Missle Crisis, JFK Assassination, Vietnam War, Apollo 11 moon landing, and many others throughout his tenure. His trademark ending phrase of "...and that's the way it is," followed by the date, keeps in line with objective journalism, with many revering Cronkite for his professional experience.
