Despite the continued presence of British troops in major American colonial cities, the situation of rebellion had angered King George III of England to the point that on August 22, 1775, he declared the American Colonies in a state of open rebellion. Armed conflict had broken out months previously in New England, and the subsequent publication of the Olive Branch Petition by the colonists did nothing to change the diplomacy of King George. With continued persistence from the colonists, and the writing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, King George III had nothing to do but consider the colonists as enemies of England. The American Revolutionary War was influential in seeing the decline of the British Empire in North America.
