As a response to German aggression in Western Europe, on August 4, 1914, the United Kingdom declared war on Germany. This occurred just months after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Serbia, igniting aggressions that lead to the beginning of World War One. The supposed "powder keg of Europe" saw pre-war alliances being activated, causing nearly all of Western Europe to be in a state of open warfare. The British forces were primarily centered along the Western Front, with the British and French being among the first nations to use poisonous gas in warfare.
