Vicksburg captured in Union siege.

  • Vicksburg, Mississippi

Attempting to capture a major Confederate stronghold, on July 4, 1863, General Ulysses S. Grant seized the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi.  The city had been under attack for over 45 days, with the Union army cutting off food and supplies to the town, thus limiting the efforts of the Confederacy to wage a legitimate defense.  As the city fell, the Union gained control of the Mississippi River, the life-line of the Confederacy, and established Grant as a legitimate Union general.  The institution of total war led to heavy civilian casualties.
