In one of the most stunning battles of World War Two, on May 25, 1940 the Battle of Dunkirk began. A steady German advance isolated the main body of Allied forces at Dunkirk as they attempted to defend the French mainland during the famed Battle of France. Just days after, the Allied forces decided to implement a mass evacuation of those isolated forces to England. Over 300000 men were eventually evacuated by private and commercial naval vessals, despite over 30000 French soldiers being taken prisoner by the Nazi army.
