In a dramatic turn of events, on May 23, 1915, Italy joins the World War One effort on the Allied side, declaring war on Austria-Hungary.  After the signing of the London Pact, and heavily influenced by the United Kingdom and France, Italy became an allied belligerent, with the promise that they would receive crucial ethnic Italian territory in Germany.  This period would heavily influence the rise of fascism during the 1920s.
