Following the secession of many states in the south, on May 8, 1861, the Confederate States of America was organized with the capital in Richmond, Virginia. Washington D.C. is only miles from Richmond, though the Confederate capital was not taken until the end of the war in 1865. Virginia was the location of several of the most crucial battles of the American Civil War, including Bull Run, Chancellorsville, and others.
