On May 7, 1948, towards the end of the Hague Congress, the Council of Europe was founded in The Hague, Netherlands. The organization is regarded as the oldest organization working towards the unification of European countries, and is recognized the by the United Nations. The group was formed to unite the battered European nations under common goals of progress and rebuilding.
