The event occurred exactly 200 years after the birth of Thomas Jefferson, the 3rd President of the United States and author of the revolutionary Declaration of Independence. Despite the ravages occurring in World War Two, the memorial dedication attracted thousands, and remains among the most visited national monuments in Washington D.C.
