First human in space completed Vostok mission.

A turning point in history, on Apr. 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first human to travel into space.  Gagarin made one orbit around the earth in the spacecraft Vostok 1.  The flight established Russian superiority, though would be challenged by the United States, and the ensuing Space Race challenge from President John Kennedy.
