In a controversial assertion of parliamentary authority, on Mar. 24, 1972, the United Kingdom imposed direct rule over Northern Ireland.  The act stipulated that major policy issues would be handled by the British government's Northern Ireland office, with daily matters being handled by the Northern Irish local governments.
