My great-great-great grandfather Julius Cohen Higgins was October 23, 1840 in Big River TS, Jefferson Missouri. On September 20th, 1864 he enlisted into the Grand Army of the Republic as a Corporal in Company D of the 20th Iowa Infantry where he served until July 8th, 1865.
He became a member of a veterans organization and transferred his membership from Correctionville, Iowa to Ida Grove, Iowa in 1887.
Julius lived in Ida County for 32 years and served as City Marshal in Ida Grove for 20 years. In the summer of 1905 there was a heavy rainstorm that flooded the Odebolt Creek that runs through Ida Grove. For three hours Julius stood in the creek with water up to his hips roping logs so they would not take out the bridge. He became ill and for the next week still imagined that he was standing in the water roping the logs until he died on July 4th, 1905.
He was first married to Nancy Jane Connor in 1861(?) (my g-g-g-grandmother) and when she died in 1897 he married Bessie Long in 1898.
