In one of the first major events in American history, on Mar. 4, 1629, Massachusetts Bay Colony was granted a royal charter. The charter, organized after devastating bankruptcy, granted the Massachusetts General Court the authority to elect officers and make laws for the colony. It was under this new organization that the first Thanksgiving was held on July 8, 1629.
