Jefferson Davis is inaugurated as the provisional President of the Confederate States of America.

Jefferson Davis elected President of newly formed Confederate States of America.

On Feb. 18, 1861, Jefferson Davis was elected provisional President of the Confederate State of America, just months preceding the outbreak of Civil War.  Davis had initially argued against seccession, though when opposed by a number of delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Montgomery, Alabama, he reluctantly gave in.
