On Feb. 18, 1861, Jefferson Davis was elected provisional President of the Confederate State of America, just months preceding the outbreak of Civil War. Davis had initially argued against seccession, though when opposed by a number of delegates at the Constitutional Convention in Montgomery, Alabama, he reluctantly gave in.
