As a means to assert influence in the American colonies, on Feb. 8, 1693, King William III and Queen Mary III granted a charter in Virginia for the formation of a college in the New World. As one of the first universities in the American Colonies, the university still stands to this day, claiming notable alumni in Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, and George Washington, among others.
