On Jan. 30, 1968, the North Vietnamese launched a surprising offensive in South Vietnam, thus effectively turning the tide of the war. Though celebrated as the Vietnamese New Year, this day marked the strategic targeting of important South Vietnamese military locations. The casualty rate would dramatically increase following this operation, showing the resolve of the Vietcong.
