The Tet Offensive begins when Viet Cong launches surprise attacks in South Vietnam.

Surprise attacks surprise UN units in South Vietnam.

On Jan. 30, 1968, the North Vietnamese launched a surprising offensive in South Vietnam, thus effectively turning the tide of the war.  Though celebrated as the Vietnamese New Year, this day marked the strategic targeting of important South Vietnamese military locations.  The casualty rate would dramatically increase following this operation, showing the resolve of the Vietcong.
