The U.N. deadline for the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from occupied Kuwait expires.

Iraqi situation intensifies with disavowal of U.N. sanction.

Tensions increased in the Middle East on Jan. 15, 1991, as the deadline for the withdrawal of Iraqi forces from Kuwait passed.  Accordingly, the stage was set for war in the Persian Gulf region, at the request of the United Nations.  This was one of several events that would characterize division in the Middle East for years to follow.
