Sam Ferrone, served a very distinguished career in three theaters of the World War II. He served his first few months in the North Atlantic, then most of his war career in the Caribbean & US Theater, and his last few months serving in the Pacific Theater.

He enter the service on Dec, 30 1941 and was listed as Rank Apprentice Seaman (A.S.) and from January through July was on the USS New York (BB-34). With the outbreak of war, New York‍ 's overhaul was sped up and completed four weeks after the attack

on Pearl Harbor. She returned to duty escorting cargo and troop ships to Iceland and Scotland. She continued on patrol duty for the next year. In her first series of escorts, she left Norfolk 15 February, arrived in New York 16 February, Nova Scotia 21 February, and Iceland 2 March, returning to Norfolk on 27 March. She left there on her second patrol 24 April and arrived at New York the next day, Nova Scotia 2 May, Newfoundland 5 May, and Iceland 10 May, returning to New York on 20 May. The next day she left for a third escort, arriving again at Nova Scotia on 2 June and Scotland on 10 June, returning to Norfolk on 30 June.Following these three escort missions, she put in for overhaul in Norfolk. When he transferred he was Seaman Second Class (S2c V-6)

Sam then in July was transferred to Sub Chaser School (location not listed) according to USS New York Muster Reports.

Sam showed in the Commissioning Muster Reports of Submariner Chaser PC-1192 on November 26. 1942 as Seaman First Class (S1c-V6) . PC-1192 was station out of submarine chasing base located in the British West Indies at U.S. Naval Operating Base Trinidad B.W.I. While on board he went from E-3 to E-6 at the end of his tour he was promoted three times to become a Boatswain Mate First Class Petty Officer (BM1). In November or December 1944 he Transferred. In World War II built PCs replaced the larger and more valuable DD's and DE's around harbors and restricted waters. The 173 foot World War II constructed PC was steel hulled, twin diesel propelled and armed with a dual-purpose 3"/50 and 40mm gun. Later the 3"/50 was replaced with a single Bofors 40mm and three single 20mm guns were added. PCs carried a considerable amount of detection and ranging gear for locating submarines. They were capable of a speed of about 18 knots and were highly maneuverable. The Steel-hulled PC-461 Class ships were built in three series; PC-461 to PC-496 (36), PC-542 to PC-627 (86), PC-776 to PC-826 (51), PC-1077 to PC-1265 (189). Primary Duty of the Vessels was to Escort Commercial Ships with Oil and other goods in the Caribbean to the US.

December 17, 1944, has Sam listed in the Commissioning Crew of ATA-212 a auxiliary ocean tug as Boatswain Mate First Class Petty Officer. Not much is know of the service of the vessel except by WWII's end it was part of the occupying force Tokyo Bay, Japan. This is where Sam on November 1st, 1945 that Sam transferred to USS Mendocino (APA-100) for Transport to FFT SEPCEN (Separation Center) for discharge in the US. On November 19, 1945
