In Company G of the 7th WV Cavalry. He was a farmer who was born about 1837 in Monroe Co., (West) Virginia. Ballard was 5ft. 9in. tall with a fair complexion, blue eyes, and dark hair. He married Elizabeth J. Lavender January 9, 1852. Their children: Wilson, Poletus W., James P., and William. William Ballard was shot and killed March 18, 1865 in camp with the musket of John Wesley Adkins. Adkins was arrested and charged with Ballard's murder.
