Arthur Norman Rumpf Sr., 87, of Bedford, passed away Saturday, October 1, 2011, in Carilion Bedford Memorial Hospital. He was born on March 14, 1924, in Locust Gap, Pa., a son of the late Jacob Edward Rumpf and Clara Alfreda Shipp Rumpf. He was a member of the Seat Pleasant Lodge #218 in District Height, Md., was Little League Coordinator in Maryland and was "Man of the Year" and also did five years at the food bank and five or more at Bedford Christian Ministries. He served in World War II as a tail-gunner and engineer on a B25 bomber and flew 72 missions over Germany, taking out bridges and railroads, etc. He was retired from Greyhound after 30 years. He is survived by He is survived by his wife and caretaker, Frances Smallwood Rumpf; two sons, Arthur Rumpf Jr., of Albuquerque, N.M., and Douglas Rumpf and wife, Jen, of Mt. Airy, Md.; a daughter, Connie M. Buck, of Laurel, Md.; a sister, Alice Cress, Phoenixville, Pa.; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service with Masonic Rites will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by the Rev. John Salley. The family will receive friends on Tuesday October 4, 2011, from 10 until 11 a.m., preceding the service, at the funeral home.
