uring the Civil War, over 267 men were convicted of crimes such as desertion and murder. Because desertion undermined the discipline of soldiers and military authority, army commanders decided to set an example to potential deserters and choose soldiers of foreign birth to do so. These men could not defend themselves and there was little sympathy for them.
