Herman Martin "Mickey" Doell was born October 30, 1917 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey. His parents were Ludvig and Clara Schneider Doell. His father was born in Germany and worked as a Bookkeeper for a Silk Company, he died in 1925. His mother was also born in Germany. They had three children with Herman as the youngest. Herman attended Bellville High School and was active in German club, swimming and tennis. A quote in his year book states "still waters run deep".

He had enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces and served during World War II. Doell had the rank of Second Lieutenant. Service number assignment was O-687561. Attached to 34th Bomber Group, Heavy, 7th Bomber Squadron as a Pilot.

Doell lost his life on D Day June 6, 1944. He was the Pilot on the crew of B-24 Liberator #41-28838 "Misery Agent" on a mission towards Normandy on D-Day. They ran out of fuel and crashed and burned with wheels up near the English coast killing all 9 crew members on board. They were still carrying twelve 500lb bombs at the time. Mission number 10 Took off at 0234 hours-June 6, 1944 and flew position 1-3 in 2nd Squadron. Some reports indicate he was taken to the hospital in Ringwood but died on 8 June 44. His headstone has June 6th.

Herman M Doell is buried at Plot B Row 1 Grave 30, Cambridge American Cemetery, Cambridge, England. This is an American Battle Monuments Commission location.
