Revolutionary Apprentices to Doctors

I

am looking to substantiate the fact that my Revolutionary War Partiot, EVAN LEWIS, who received pay in the Virginia Militia in 1775 is the same one who received pay as a Doctor in 1782 and 1783. DAR accepted him as a Patriot for several of my relatives ... BUT when I sent in my application they decided that when he did not receive Militia pay after the War started he did not serve in the War . His family was Quaker and they decided that he would not fight , from a Quaker family. HOWEVER one of his younger brothers, Jessie Lewis, did serve and was wounded in the Battle of Yorktown and received a pension. (These facts are proven in the Revolutionary War Records.) My Patriot's name is Evan Lewis and I feel certain that he is the Dr. Evan Lewis is that listed in the Revolutionary War Rolls. I found his name there through Footnote. com --- a website that I think is absolutely GREAT!! My oldest Grandson is very anxious to become a Son of the American Revolution -- he is proud to be an American and his Grandfathers both participated in World War !!. His Father and an Uncle were both in the Air Force in the 1970s, and his Great Grandfather was one on the first 17 to leave from Illinois in World War 1 in 1917. This is very important to him and to my whole family that we can show our love for our Country by identifying with our Revolutionary War patriot!!!!!. i have substantiated the fact that a young man could apprentice a Doctor for 5 years and become a Doctor since there were not Medical Schools at that time. I did find an article in Footnote giving the name and information of a young man who did become an apprentice at 16 and became a Doctor in the Revolutionary War. I look forward to someone helping me to substantiate this!!!!! many thanks! Margaret Lewis Cookson
