e came from Holland when he was 5 in 1886. He grew up in the Chicago area and enlisted in the USN in 1900 as a coal tender. He served for 20 years on several ships and retired as a CWO. He continued in the reserves while he worked as a foreman at the Naval Supply Center San Diego in 1922 until he retired in 1930.
