During the Korean War, Master Sergeant Fanelli was assigned to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. On the night of April 21, 1951, he was returning to Clark AFB from a village fiesta with four other airmen when their car was ambushed by communist Huks killing all airmen. Master Sergeant Fanelli was awarded the Purple Heart and the National Defense Service Medal.
