Woodstock Memories

LevonHelmElectricDirtCoverAdded by: jobarry064Levon Helm played Woodstock in 1969 and 1995 with The Band. He's also lived in the Town of Woodstock for decades. Today, Tuesday, June 30, Levon released a new record, "Electric Dirt." The artwork was Levon's concept, executed by Woodstock artist Mike DuBois, who has done a lot of work for another Woodstock band, the Grateful Dead. Visit www.levonhelm.com to check out some of Levon's new tunes.

festival1[1]Added by: jobarry064This picture is for the Woodstock Diamond Dance Festival, set for July 24-26, 1766 Glasco Turnpike, Woodstock. There is something Shakespearean, and futuristic Harlequin-esque about these costumes that is just so, well, Woodstock. If you're in town, call 845-679-7757 for information.
Back to the GardenAdded by: jobarry064Pete Fornatale is a New York City DJ who has published a book, "Back to the Garden,' that features first-hand accounts of Woodstock - something of a novel approach to a story that's been dissected to death. Pete's got some good stories in here, most notably, Roger Daltrey of The Who having a dream about Woodstock three weeks before arriving there....Pete will be at Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, at the original site, on July 21.

WeirLevonVibesAdded by: jobarry064Woodstock veterans (1969 and 1994) Bob Weir and Levon Helm performed together Saturday night, July 25, at the Gathering of the Vibes music festival in Bridgeport, Conn., Weir, who played Woodstock with the Grateful Dead, was at The Vibes with his band RatDog, while Levon brought the Levon Helm Band. That's Weir with the guitar and Levon on drums. Photo by John W. Barry/Poughkeepsie Journal
CrosbyStillsNash Added by: jobarry064Also regarding The Vibes, Crosby, Stills & Nash, who also played Woodstock, closed out the festival this weekend. I spoke to Graham Nash a few weeks ago for a story that ran Sunday in the Poughkeepsie Journal: http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/article/20090726/LIFE/907260306/1005/LIFE
JimmyFallonAdded by: jobarry064Woodstock concert promoter Michael Lang appeared on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" last week. Check it out: http://www.hulu.com/watch/86206/late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-michael-lang The funny thing here is that Fallon grew up in Saugerties, just a few miles east on Route 212 from the Town of Woodstock, where Lang has lived for years. Also - Lang held Woodstock '94 in Saugerties, not far from Jimmy's old neighborood.
WoodstockGuitar5Added by: jobarry064I covered a sweet story about two weeks ago, about a second-grade class at Woodstock Elementary School who worked with a local guitar player, who is also a carpenter, and a local artist, on a lesson program about woodworking, music, art and peace. The guitar pictured here is the end result of their project, which they called, "Another Guitar for Peace." You can read about it here: http://www.poughkeepsiejournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2009908020303

Grossman3Added by: jobarry064I spent the morning of Friday, Aug. 7, up in Woodstock at WDST FM, talking on the air about the Poughkeepsie Journal's big Woodstock special section, publishing Sunday, Aug. 9. WDST is in the Bearsville Theater complex, just outside downtown Woodstock. The Bearsville Theater and several other buildings were built by Woodstock music impresario Albert Grossman, who managed Bob Dylan, The Band, Janis Joplin and many others. He is also buried on the grounds......
BearsvilleTheaterAdded by: jobarry064Albert Grossman built the Bearsville Theater, which was designed by John Storyk, who attended Woodstock and designed Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios in Manhattan Storyk currently lives in Highland, N.Y., just across the Hudson River from Poughkeepsie.

birdsAdded by: jobarry064Just another Saturday on the village green in downtown Woodstock, N.Y., I snapped this picture on my way to the Tinker Street Cinema, on Saturday, Aug. 8, for a sold-out, advance screening of "Taking Woodstock" at the Tinker Street Cinema in Woodstock, N.Y., on Aug. 8. By the way, I also shot the other photos below related to the "Taking Woodstock" screening...that's John W. Barry/Poughkeepsie Journal for the photo credit, for those of you keeping score at home... :-)

musicmanAdded by: jobarry064Taking Woodstock" was screened at the Tinker Street Cinema in Woodstock, N.Y., on Aug. 8. On my walk to the theater through downtown Woodstock, I came across one band that was breaking down, after having performed on the village green, a second that was still playing a few blocks away, just off the street, and this guy, strumming away. It was just another typical day in downtown Woodstock. Photo by John W. Barry/Poughkeepsie Journal
petitAdded by: jobarry064Philippe Petit, if you'' remember, is the tight-rope walker who walked on a wire between the World Trade Center's twin towers several decades ago. A documentary about him, and that feat, won the Oscar this year. Petit, who was in attendance at Saturday's screening of "Taking Woodstock" in Woodstock, N.Y., lives very close to this famous town, in West Shokan, where, by the way, Jimi Hendrix lived at the time of the Woodstock festival in 1969. Photo by John W. Barry/Poughkeepsie Journal
LeonGeriAdded by: jobarry064Leon Gast, who lives in Woodstock, won the Academy Award for his documentary, "When We Were Kings," which is an iconic piece of work detailing the historic 1974 boxing match, between Muhammad Ali and George Frazier, in the Congo. Leon and his wife, Geri, attended the Aug. 8 screening of "Taking Woodstock" at the Tinker Street Cinema, in the Town of Woodstock.
LangReservedAdded by: jobarry064I have been trained as a writer but love taking pictures. When I have a camera with me, I look at idle time as opportunity time, and that was the case on Saturday, Aug. 8, when I was let into the Tinker Street Cinema early for a screening of "Taking Woodstock." Woodstock promoter Michael Lang lives in Woodstock and attended the screening. I thought this picture was simple but interesting. Photo by John W. Barry/Poughkeepsie Journal

fieldAdded by: jobarry064Bethel Woods is pretty strict about access to the field where the crowd was during Woodstock. Their policy is - no access. But for some reason, today, folks were checking it out so I took my first walk onto that famous field. There was a buzz, a sensation, a force field. I felt like I was on a flying carpet that was temporarily docked, but which could take off at any moment....Yes - I have been up since 6 a.m. and worked many hours today, so forgive the analogy....but that's what it felt like.
chipAdded by: jobarry064So while Bethel Woods had their big scene with Richie Havens and the media, there was this scene down at the famous Woodstock monument, which is near where the stage was. I met this guy Chip Beers, who served in Vietnam, had a ticket for Woodstock, but couldn't go because he was in a Navy hospital on Long Island. I asked him why he came back to the site for the anniversary, and he said, "I felt like I had to come. I don’t know. Maybe ghosts."
