Battle of Chancellorsville


A

lso known as the Second Battle of Fredericksburg, this battle (fought 1–5 May 1863) emboldened the Confederate troops to make a decisive strike into the heart of Union territory, which materialized two months later in the Battle of Gettysburg. This is typically listed as the third costliest battle of the Civil War, with 3,271 dead and 18,753 wounded. This is also known as Lee's greatest victory of the war.
