he 11th Mississippi was formed at Corinth Mississippi on May 4 1861. It was composed of ten companies from the northern portion of the state. Its members were all volunteers and were significantly more affluent and literate than the average Confederate soldier. Students from the University of Mississippi comprised most of Company A the University Greys and part of Company G the Lamar Rifles. The 11th and 2nd Mississippi Infantry Regiments were the first two Mississippi units to be forwarded to the Virginia front arriving at Harpers Ferry on May 16.
