Clayton Batchelor in WW I Uniform c1918Added by: aunthootClayton spent about 7 months of his service in France. On Thanksgiving Day in 1918, he broke ice on the Loire River to take a bath. He was at Metz, at the front, when the armistice was signed. He got drunk the night on champagne for which he paid $2.50 a quart. On 24 Feb 1919, Clayton left France from St. Nazaire on the USS Huron. The ship travelled through the Azores on the way back to the United States, landing at Newport News, Virginia.

Clayton Batchelor in WW I Uniform 1917Added by: aunthootClayton lied about his age to enlist in the Army. He served from June 22, 1916 to July 1, 1919. His outfit was the 64th CAC: heavy artillery, 8" Howitzers and French 75's. Grandpa was an instructor on the French 75's.
Formal Gpa 1960s.JPGAdded by: aunthootGrandpa was first elected to office in 1934 when he began serving a 12-year term as a city councilman for the City of Aurora, Indiana. He spent many other years as acting mayor, county councilman, chair of the city park board, and other offices. He periodically served as acting mayor, but always refused to run for the post because he was ahamed of his lack of education. He dropped out of school after the 8th grade.
Clayton & Buddy in Cincinnati 1915Added by: aunthootThat's a 17-year old Clayton, standing on the left. He and his buddy spent 2 weeks in 1915 working on a big freighter on the Ohio River. They spent one night in Cincinnati, Ohio where they took in a show and had this photo taken.
100 Grandpa1.jpgAdded by: aunthootThis was taken at Grandpa's 100th birthday party. He was the last surviving veteran of World War 1 in Dearborn County, Indiana. As a result, all of the military groups came out to honor him on his 100th birthday and, again, at his funeral and burial a year later.

Atlantic City DNC.jpgAdded by: aunthootClayton & Minnie attended the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey August 24-27, 1964. At that convention, the Democrats mourned the loss of President John F. Kennedy and nominated Lyndon Johnson & Hubert H. Humphrey as their ticket in the next election. Grandpa was a lifelong Democratic Party activist, well-known for fundraising and getting out the vote. In this newspaper article, they are pictured with Grandpa's good friend, Indiana Senator Vance Hartke.
Baker Grandpa.jpgAdded by: aunthootClayton worked as a baker from 1920 - 1936. He worked as a line baker, as a bakery manager and, finally as the owner of his own bakery. He finally had to switch professions when he got asthma from all the flour. He was bragged about making the first devil's food cake in Dearborn County, Indiana from a mix he bought from a traveling salesman!
