Hamp Cuthbertson was a slave owned by Moses Cuthbertson in Union County, NC. Though his age appears as 90 in the 1930 census, Hamp was more likely born about 1850.

Per the Union County Pension Board he was sent to Fort Fisher with the "kinsmen of the said Moses Cuthbertson, to wit: John D. Cuthbertson and Moses Cuthbertson, Jr.; that he performed valient and faithful service in the armies of the confederacy, particularly at Fort Fisher from October, 1863 to one year following; that he endured privations as result of his service; that his services were honest and faithful…". In the initial application of July 11, 1927, Hamp shares that he helped build fortifications and "performing other strenous manual labors under the direction and command of his masters, and enduring severe privation, hunger, illness and punishments" before being returned to the home of his owner about one year later.

Hamp died between June and December of 1932 per the December pension distribution list published in The Monroe Enquirer.

Both the 1920 and 1930 census shows Hamp living as boarder within two different families. It is not known if Hamp ever married or had any children but it is likely in both cases.

It is interesting to note that the enumerator in 1930 lists Hamp as 'white' with the Barrett family of the same color.

It is also interesting to see that Hamp affirms that he was a veteran of the Civil War.
