From Jeff Sanders Pension Application dated 23 Sept. 1931, with deposition dated 23 July 1931 from Mack McManus.

County of Union

Mack McManus being duly sworn, deposes and says that he is a Confederate Veteran, having served in Co. B 26th Reg't. SCST, and is now on the Pension Roll of Union County, N.C. And this deponet further deposeth and saith that he is personally acquainted with the applicant, Jeff Sanders, having known him all of his life; that Jeff Sanders and affiant were reared in close proximity in the Lynch's River community; that Jeff Sanders is 88 years old and is blind. And this deponent further deposes and says that the said Jeff Sanders was a free negro prior to the Civil War, and was drafted into the service of the Confederacy and served for three years as a cook and laborer, throwing up breastworks and performing other necessary duties as a laborer in the armies of the Confederacy and under the command of Col. Ace Evans; that the said Jeff Sanders entered the service of the Confederate States Armies from Lancaster County, S.C., and served the greater portion of the three years in and about Charleston, S.C.; and that affiant has personal knowledge of the service of the said Jeff Sanders in the armies of the Confederacy and that the facts relative thereto are well known in the community wherein affiant and he were reared.
