By 1868, the original "local, critical, and theatrical" record, became "The Daily Morning Chronicle," proposing "to publish a bold, bright, fearless and truly independent newspaper, independent in all things, neutral in nothing." It is unique in recording historic events of California's early years of rapid growth. By 1880, San Francisco was the tenth largest city in the nation. The publishers of "The Chronicle" describe it as "a pioneer in changing newspaper writing, readability and design."
