Congress hires carpenters "to build vessels for the defense of the lakes"

In the summer of 1776 Generals Benedict Arnold and General Philip Schuyler requested resources to build a small navy to stop the English from coming from Canada through the great lakes. Here Congress gets the ball rolling.

    One might think thus from the use of the plural "lakes" but this is not referring to the Great Lakes but, rather, Lake Champlain. This culminates in the Battle of Valcour Island.
