The "Officers' Letters" are dated from 1802 -1884. Letters from officers assigned to, but not in command of; ships, stations, and Navy bureaus were forwarded to the Secretary after review by a senior officer, whose endorsement usually appears on the letter forwarded. A large portion of the letters are from warrant officers concerning such routine personnel matters as duty assignments, leave or furloughs, desertions, resignations, general courts-martial, pay, and settlement of accounts.
