Fondly Remembered

Fondly Remembered - SSG Robert Herndon Sanders served 6 yrs in Army Infantry with a tour in Korea before being recruited in Nov 1967 to the MACV-SOG Command Special Forces Unit operating in Cambodia.

These Infantry and Intelligence Specialists in small Commando Recon teams infiltrated Viet Cong Operations to obtain intelligence vital to the American military in the south. They often wore enemy uniforms and carried enemy weapons to camouflage their presence . There are few details of the following mission in Cambodia that took SSG Sanders life.

In Cambodia 5/30/68  "During infiltration of the team indications were found of a Viet Cong observer having been on the la nding zone, so the team took evasive action. After moving about 100 meters, the team came under heavy fire from an unknown sized enemy force. Within minutes, all members of the team were wounded." SP5 Hilbert W. Srumpf was credited with providing aid and carrying four of the wounded to the landing zone for evacuation. The only other account found for this mission follows::

30 May 68- Robert H. Sanders SSG, E-6, USASF. 5th SFGA, Det B-56, Project SIGMA, FOB-6, Ho Ngoc Tao, Ops 35, KIA-RR (Killed by friendly helicopter fire as he was dressed in "black pajamas" and mistaken as an enemy soldier when he ran into an open field to signal and guide incoming helicopters. Due to the tactical situation, the pilot was firing at everyone in enemy uniforms). SSG Sanders, 24 yrs old was survived by his three young children, Robert, Robin Michelle an Mark. Gone but Never Forgotten, he is still greatly missed by All who knew and loved him.  If you served with SSG Sanders please contact us.  Thank You,
