Jesse Galloway is one the most colorful characters in our family history. He married three times and had 14 known children. The story below starts off talking about his nephew, Charles, but quickly changes to his father, James and ends with Jesse. Our grandmother was the third daughter with his first wife, Sallie Williams. Her name was Sarah D. Galloway and she married Bryant Trent.

"In the veins of the gentleman whose name heads this sketch flows sterling Scotch blood, for his paternal grandfather, JAMES GALLOWAY, was born in the land of 'thistles and oatmeal', of Scotch parents. James immigrated to this country from the land of his birth in early manhood and later settled in the district known as the Old Crab Orchard, Ky. He was the founder of the family in this country, and eventually passed from life in Knox County, TN. He was one of the pioneers of that state, was active in its development, and took part in a number of engagements with the Indians, when his home and that of his neighbors was threatened. Politically, he was a Democrat. He reared a family of four sons and five daughters, including JESSE GALLOWAY, the father of the subject of this sketch, being a native of the 'dark and bloody ground'. Jesse was taken to Tennessee when quite small, and after residing there for about sixty years, he moved to Indiana, and in 1839 became a resident of Barry County, MO, where he lived until his death ten years later. Like his father before him, he was a Democrat, and also like him, he was active in asssisting in the settlement of his section, which at that time was a very wild state, inhabited by plenty of wild game of various kinds. He took part in the Creek, Seminole and Cherokee Indian Wars, and was also a participant in the War of 1812. He was married in Tennessee to SALLIE WILLIAMS, who bore him three children; Dilla, Louie and Sallie, and after the death of his first wife he again married in Tennessee, his second wife bearing him eight children: Mariah, Peggie, Elizabeth, Charles (the subject of this sketch), Alexander, Caroline, Mary and one who died in infancy. The mother died in Morgan County, IN in 1836, her birth having occured in Tennessee, she being a member of a prominent old family of that state by the name of CALDWELL. The father's third marriage was to a Mrs. COONS, who bore him three chidren: Melville, Anna and Francis. The last wife is still living, though advanced in years, in Berry (sic) County, MO. "Jesse Galloway is known to be a son of James Galloway. In Goodspeed's book, The Reminiscent History of the Ozark Region, he referred to Jesse Galloway as a former native of the 'dark and bloody ground'. Jesse was taken to Tennessee when quite small and resided there until he was nearly 60 years old. Jesse married Sally Williams…After Sallie's death, he married Nancy Caldwell…After Nancy's death he married Hannah Sparks Koons. It was in Morgan County, Indiana that his daughters Delilah and Sarah married the Trent brothers."

The ground was called dark and bloody because of all the Indians who died on the Trail of Tears, a shameful period in our national history.

in the War of 1812, Jesse GALLOWAY enlisted as a Private (promoted to Corporal) in Major John Chiles' Battalion, Mounted Gunmen, East TN Volunteers, also known as Major John Childes' Battalion, East TN Mounted Infantry Volunteers. Robert CALDWELL enlisted in the same Battalion (Sept. 20, 1814 - May 1, 1815), as did Alexander, Benjamin, James, and William CALDWELL, and Arthur Y. and Michael LOONEY. --War of 1812 Muster Rolls, NARA Record Group 94, M602, roll 32 (Caldwell), roll 77 (Galloway), roll 128 (Looney).

1. He appeared in court in 1801 in Knox Co TN when he signed a petition for the creation of Roane Co from Knox Co as Jessey Gallaway.

2.James Gallaway and Charles Gallaway were also signers.

3. He sold land in 1805 in Roane Co, TN. James and Jesse Galloway were the grantors, Michael Baker the grantee. Source Lynne Robinson.

4. A list of Free Taxable Inhabitants of Roane Co AD 1805: names James Galloway and Jesse Galloway.

5. He appeared in court 4 Nov 1806 in Kingston, Roane,TN :Jessy Galloway was fined $1 at Court Martial".

6. He appeared as Jessee Galleway on 1805 Roane Co, TN tax list.

7. He purchased items at estate of George Preston Sept 1808 in Roane Co.TN.

8. In Knox Co TN on 4 April 1811 he was married to Sallie Williams, and signed with his mark, indicating he could not write.
