Joseph Victor was one of very few rascals in our family. I say rascal because he fathered two illegimate children and went to jail for a short time for non-payment of taxes. His parents were Joseph Bofill and Eulalie Antoinette Rieux. They were both born in New Orleans, as was Joseph.

Joseph Victor had two illegitimate children as a per birth certificate in my possession: "Mr. Charles Will, a native of Switzerland residing in the 2nd district of this city on Custom House Street who hereby declares that on the seventh of March of this present year (7 March 1862) at two o'clock P.M. was born in this city a male child named Joseph Bofill, issue of the illegitimate marriage of Joseph Bofill and Ellen O'Brien, both natives of Louisiana." Note that in the birth records below, Joseph and Ellen also had a son named Joseph.

I have a marriage certificate for Joseph Victor Bofill to Sarah Doran on 31 Jul 1866 at the Annunciation Church in New Orleans, Lousiana. The marriage is registered in Marriage Vol. 2, part twok, 1866-1875, page 205.

Death date from obituary in Times Picayune newspaper.

Death certificate states: "On 18th of March, 1902, Joseph V. Bofill, (white) a native of this city aged 65 years, departed this life; deceased was a widower and a labor agent." Birthplace of parents given as Louisiana on his death certificate.

J. V. Bofil served in the state legislature as a representative from Orleans in 1864. It would have a been a Confederate government at that time.

1860 CENSUS OF NEW ORLEANS, 6TH WARD:

Jos Bofill, age 24, clerk (living with some other male clerks and a housekeeper).

Listed in 1880 CENSUS OF NEW ORLEANS, Vol. 9, ED 44, sheet 20, line 33. Name given as Joseph Bofil, occupation as jobber, age is 43. Birthplace of Joseph and parents is given as Louisiana. Street address in #94 South Ursulines. The current number for that address is 816-818 Ursulines. In the same census, it said that everyone in the household could read and write.

In looking at the original of the 1870 census, I found that Mary Hughs, age 47, born in Ireland, was also living in the household, along with Mary Jane Hughs, age 14, born in Louisiana and attending school. Both Mary and Mary Jane were listed as having a father and mother of foreign birth.

There is a reference to a marriage between a Bofill and a Rabasa in the St. Louis Cathedral Marriage Register 7, Jan. 1838-July 1840.

I found the name, P. Bofil, in 1860 CENSUS OF NEW ORLEANS. The age was given as 24 and occupation as bartender. Place of birth was given as Spain. Pablo and Pedro Bofill are too old to be this person but he could be a child of Pablo or Pedro if the birthplace is wrong. It's also possible that the age is wrong since microfilm is difficult to read. Another possibility is that Joseph Victor may have had a brother. If this brother were age 24 in the 1860 census, he would have been born about 1836 but the brother couldn't have been born in Spain. So, if the age on the census is correct, this Bofill is not a close relative.

I found a record of victims of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1878: Paul H. Bofill, age 3 years, New Orleans, Oct. 4, 1878. Address was 94 Ursilines. The address is the same as the one at which Joseph Victor was living in 1880, and Joseph Victor declared his death.

The names of his children were given to me by Fred Kokemore in a letter in January, 2000. He gave me the children in this birth order: John Walter, 1868; James V., 1870; Sidney Emile, 1872; Warren, 1874; Paul H., 1875; Olivier, 1876; Laura, 1878; Albert Sidney, 1878 and Louise, 1880. On the 1880 census, James is listed as age 13 and John Walter as age 11 so I changed their order and guessed at a birth year for James. Mary is age 10, Albert, 2 and Laura, 2 months on the same census so I guessed on their birth years also.

Mary Bofill Levesque wrote in a letter dated 1977: "There were four Bofill brothers, James, the oldest, Albert, John W. (my father) and Warren, the youngest. My father had three sisters, can't remember the name of the oldest, second was Laura and youngest was Louise. James and Albert married but never had children. There were never any sons to carry on the family name."
