Samuel E Prescott was born in Appling County, Ga in 1824. In 1837 at age 13, he served in Capt. Samuel Swilley's Company, 2nd Florida Militia and in 1839-40 as corporal in Captain David R. Bryan's Company, Georgia Militia, during the Indian Wars.
Married Lucy Peterson in 1850.
First tax collector for Echols County, GA from 1856-61.
March 10,1861 he enlisted as a private in Company C, 7th Florida Infantry Regiment C.S.A. He fought in the battles of Chicamaugua, Missionary Ridge and the Battle of Atlanta. His regiment was with General Robert E. Lee's army at the surreder of Appomatix in 1865.
In 1866 with a yoke of oxen and a wagon, his family headed south and settled in Joshua Creek, near Arcadia, FL.
In 1869 they moved to what became Sebring (formerly Manatee County), and were the first settlers to what was to become Highlands County,FL.
The Highlands County Historical Society dedicated a marker to his memory at the family Cemetary in 1976.
