Lawrence J. Freeland

1916-1999

Lawrence Jonathan Freeland of rural Mayville died Friday, June 25, 1999 at his home. He was 82. He was born October 8, 1916, the son of Charles and Emma (Bruns) Freeland. He served in World War II as a paratrooper and sergeant in the Pacific Theater, earning three bronze battle stars. He married Janetta McAllister on July 12, 1947. He was employed at GM's Pontiac Motors Division for 34 years and he also farmed on Willits Road.

In retirement, he worked at People's Gas and Oil Mobil station in Mayville for many years. He was a member of the Michigan Chapter of the 503rd Parachute Association and he loved travel and visiting family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Janetta; daughter Lynn Freeland of Traverse City; sons Larry Freeland of Rochester Hills and Gary Freeland of Clarkston; grandchildren: Neil Freeland, Erika (Freeland) Sisson, Gary Freeland Jr., Starlit (Freeland) Dorner; four great grandchildren; special family friends Jeanne Carboneau and Richard Sullivan; beloved sister, Clara (Freeland) Foote; brother, Leonard Freeland of Mayville; and special cousins, Orlin Buchholz of Crete, Illinois, and Margaret Buhl of Mayville; and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was also predeceased by a sister, Jane Leonhardt, brother, Donald Freeland, sister-in-law, Lucille McAllister Nickert and her husband, Peter Nickert.

Visitation was Monday, June 28 at the Tiffin Funeral Home in Mayville. The Rev. Ronald Hutchinson of Silverwood United Methodist Church conducted a family service on Tuesday, June 29 prior to cremation. Arrangements were made by Tiffin Funeral Home, Inc., Mayville.

The family suggests memorials be made to the Mayville Area Museum, Silverwood United Methodist Church, Lapeer Hospice, or a charity of the donor's choice.
