16 Apr 1945 — Philippines
When information of an advancing enemy column was received at Company G headquarters, a final protective line was subjected to heavy rifle, machine gun, mortar, and artillery fire as the enemy attempted a breakthrough. Noticing that his weapons platoon leader was wounded, Staff Sergeant Personette assumed command, and with complete disregard for his own safety, in the face of heavy enemy fire, he gave continuous and close supervision to the operation of the machine gun section. Although his section suffered 50 percent casualties, Staff Sergeant Personette’s aggressiveness and initiative maintained all guns in position and firing until the enemy attack was repulsed.
