A graveside memorial service with full military honors for Jamie Erwin Browning, age 94 of Sumter, SC, will be held on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at 10:00 A.M. in the Ashland City Cemetery with the Reverend Claude Bennett officiating.

Mr. Browning passed away on July 5, 2012 at the Sumter East Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Millerville, Alabama to the late John Daniel Browning and Dora Lee Lowry Browning on March 29, 1918, he was a graduate of the University of Alabama and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in the U. S. Air Force Reserve. As a pilot in World War II, Mr. Browning flew 30 combat missions over Germany, participated in the Berlin Airlift and also served during the Korean War. For his military service, he was awarded 19 decorations, among those were the Distinguished Flying Cross and four Air Medals. Mr. Browning was also a retired civil service worker and had worked a number of years at Shaw Air Force Base in Sumter, South Carolina. He was also a member of the Order of Daedalians, the Air Force Association and the Retired Officers Association.

One of six brothers who served in World War II, Mr. Browning lost two brothers in combat: Ned Erskine Browning and Leslie Edwin Browning. Mr. Browning was also preceded in death by his wife, Emily James Browning; one sister, Dannie Lee Browning Burns and two brothers: Kiffin Wilson Browning and Francis Harold Browning.

He is survived by two sisters: Barbara Browning Parris of Columbia, SC and Marihalie Browning Leeman of Farmingdale, Maine; one brother, Lindy Donald Browning of Spartanburg, SC and numerous nieces and nephews.

Benefield Funeral Home of Ashland is in charge of the local arrangements.
