Walter Dzierlatka - Army Career


Walter Dzierlatka joined the army on March 18, 1941 and was in the Co H 101st Infantry. He was a Sgt.  heavy machine gunner, Sharpshooter marksman. The battles and campaigns he was a part of included; Northern France, Rhineland and Ardennes.  While in France and Luxembourg he served as squad leader of heavy machine gun Squad, supervised seven men in sighting up and firing heavy 30 caliber, meter-cooled, machine gun to provide automatic fire in support of rifleman breaking through enemy defenses, harassing enemy troops and positions, and to defend against enemy counter attacks. On January 2, 1945 in Luxembourg he was wounded by enemy shrapnel. The wound to his left leg required amputation. Walter arrived back in the U.S on February 25, 1945. Walter died May 12, 1956 in Fall River Ma.
