Ernest C. Scofield was born on January 9, 1921 in the city of Seattle, King County, Washington to Ernest Rundell Scofield and Clara Faye Scofield, nee Cresap. Ernest had one younger sister, Clara Scofield. The family lived in Seattle, where Ernest R. Scofield worked as a machinist in the shipyards. Ernest C. Scofield graduated from West Seattle High School. Before joining the military, he worked for 18 months in Alaska and in the Yukon for the Alaskan Railway company.

Ernest C. Scofield enlisted in the Army Air Corps on January 15, 1942 in Seattle. He was single, without dependents, and had a high school education. His occupation was fireman. Scofield trained at Geiger Field in Spokane, Washington.

Staff Sergeant Ernest Scofield served with the 436th Bomb Squadron, 7th Bomb Group. In April 1942, the 436th was assigned to the new Tenth Air Force in India, where it was re-equipped with long-range Consolidated B-24D Liberators. It conducted long-distance heavy bomb raids over Japanese targets, primarily in Burma, Thailand, and Indochina. On November 29, 1942, Sgt. Scofield was a gunner aboard B-24 #41-11912. The target that day was Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar), one of many bombing missions intended to clear the Japanese from Burma and reopen the Burmese supply lines to China. Scofield’s plane did not return from the mission. His body was never recovered. His name is inscribed on the Tablets of the Missing, Manila American Cemetery and Memorial, Manila, Capital District, National Capital Region, Philippines. He was posthumously awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart
