340thBG,486thBS, daughter of Lt Angelo Adams (Joni Adams Sesma) has a story; 2 Oct. 2007

My father, Angelo Adams, was a 1st Lt., Bombardier/Navigator with the 486 Bomb Sq, 340th Bomb Group. He was on Corsica from May 1944 to April 1945. A very good buddy of his, Thomas D. Cahill, went MIA on February 4 or 5, 1945. Cahill’s brother had been reported MIA in France in December of 44. I don’t know any details about the February mission or what plane it was and so on. I only discovered how much it affected my father in recent years when I started my project with his letters to my mother. It’s evident from the letters that he was pretty devastated by this loss. He never talked about it to us—of course he hardly ever talked about the War.

In October 1944, he had sent to my mother, the address of Cahill’s mother and sister in Los Angeles, California. My mother was living in Los Angeles with her own mother while Dad was overseas and so she was able to visit the Cahill women several times before returning to Chicago in April to meet my father on his return..

In December 1944 he wrote that Cahill’s brother had been reported MIA in France. He didn’t write to my mother about Cahill being MIA until sometime in March—something to do with censorship rules for letters. Until recently, I was never able to determine if either brother survived, died, or was still listed as MIA. The mother is surely dead by now and there was no mention of the sister’s name--or of the brother's name. Also, I have never seen the name mentioned on 57th site or any other web site so I’ve never been able to verify information.
_**However I believe that I have finally identified the brother….. Tom's brother’s name was John W. "JACK" Cahill. He died November 21, 1944 and he is buried in the Netherlands American Cemetery. My Dad’s friend Thomas D. Cahill is listed as buried at Ft. Scott National Cemetery in Kansas with a death date of 2/5/45.

(Joni) I have spoken to my mother and she says that not ever knowing what happened to his friend was something that always bothered my father even up to the end of his own life in 1998.
