Herbert Winfred 'Bud' Elmlund (Jan 18, 1919 - Jan 6, 2000) was the fourth child (son) of Per Emil Elmlund (1879-1953) and Jennie Olive [Stromberg] Elmlund (1882-1977). He was born in Los Angeles, California and died in Oak Harbor, Washington. His siblings were: BeatriceMae Elmlund Schott; Selma Elvera Elmlund (1910-Living); and Irvin Oscar Elmlund (1914-xxxx).

Herbert 'Bud' spent most of his youth in Riverside, California. He graduated from Riverside Community College about 1939 along with his good friend, Travis Hoover. Their plan had been to join the Army Air Corps after graduation. Travis did that and was accepted. Bud delayed and was told that they werenot enlisting others. Bud then enlisted in the United Stated Marine Corps on Jan 6, 1940.

Bud was stationed at the Marine Barracks, Pearl Harbor, HI and witnessed the attack on Pearl Harbor as the flag was being raised on December 7, 1941. Bud's friend, Travis Hoover, had become an Army Pilot and was the commander of the 2nd bomber to take-off from the U.S.S. Hornet on America's 1st strike back on the Japanese homeland in 1942. Bud served in the pacific during WWII and was released in 1945.

While visiting a friend's house (Okema), he met Marion Hauser (daughter of Marion Earl Hauser & Cassie Lee [Mosier] Hauser). Bud and Marion were married on April 9, 1945 in Riverside California. Bud worked as a US Mail carrier for awhile after WWII. When the Marine Corps became short-handed in 1946, Bud re-enlisted and was first stationed at El Toro MCAB in Orange county, CA. Later about 1950, Bud was reassigned to an MC air detachment near Pearl Harbor. His wife and son joined him there and lived at Eva Beach, HI until about 1952. Bud was next reassigned to an MCAB near Miami, Fla. Bud and family took about two weeks to cross country from California to Fla. The family lived in Florida for about one year. Bud spent much time training with his unit in Puerto Rico during this time. The family did however, find time for several memorable drives down the Florida Keys and one trip to Pre-Castro Havanna, Cuba. Bud's unit was then deployed to Japan and Bud went with his unit by way of the Panama Canal. Marion, son (gary), and their dog (Ollie) drove cross country to live with Marion's parents in Riverside, CA while Bud was in Japan. Upon retrning from Japan, Bud was assigned to Headquarters Marine Corps which is located near the Pentagon just outside of Washington, DC in Northern Virginia. The family spent about four years there before Bud was re-assigned to Camp LeJeune, NC. About 1961, Bud was ordered to deploy to South Vietnam.

Contemplating retirement soon after his return, Bud and Marion purchased a farm in King George County, Virginia and moved the family there to await him until his return. Bud's unit deployed to Vietnam as one of the first 'regular' units with a mission to establish an airbase at Soc Trang in an area south of Saigon. Bud returned to the USA in 1963 was assigned to the air detachment at Quantico MCB. He retired from the USMC at Quantico with twenty three years service. Bud and Marion lived at the Virginia farm for a number of years. While living in King George, about 1965/66 bud suffered a 'congestive heart failure' and was admited to the hospital at Quantico MCB. He soon recovered.

At the invitation of Marion's brother (Glen Hauser) they decided to relocate to Whitbey Island, WA. Where Bud managed a WA State ABC store within a building owned by Glen. Glen and his wife (Josh) owned and operated a book store in the same building. Bud worked there until he was eligible for social security. During this time Bud had more problems with his heart and underwent a 'heart valve' replacement that significantly restored the quality of life of his heath. Bud and Marion began taking trips. Most of these were through TROA and most were to the South Pacific. After about Twenty years in WA State, and following the birth of a grandchild in Virginia, Bud & Marion decided to return to Virginia. They purchased a house in Fredricksburg, Virginia. During this time Bud again had problems with his heart. About sixteen years after his first 'vale replacement', Bud underwent surgery for the replacement of a second valve. The new valve was the same make and model as the first but with a much higher serial number. The recovery was not as dramatic as the first and Bud continued to suffer from weakness. Bud & Marion lived in Fredericksburg, VA for about five years before deciding to return to Washington State.

In Washington State, they rented first a house with a dramatic view of the Pugent Sound from a high cliff. The problem with this proprty was the incredibly high winds that would sweep across the Pacific and into the entrance of the Pugent Sound. When this occurred to was hard to open a door against the wind and not safe for the young and elderly to walk outside. They next rented an apartment within the town of Oak Harbor, WA. Bud's health continued to deteriorate and he died on December 6, 2001. Bud was my father and is dearly missed. Semper Fi.
