Aviator Missing in African Area

Pilot of Lightening

Word has been received by Mrs. Maye B. Yates, 966 Twenty-seventh, that her son, Lieut. Leo Yates, 24, the pilot of a P-38 Lockheed Lightening in the US army air corp has been missing in action since January 23rd.

Lt. Yates graduated from Ogden high shchool and Weber college. He enlisted in June of 1941 and began his pilot raining at Cal-Aero academy, Ontario, Cali., Oct. 1, 1941. He received his basic training at Minter field, Bakersfield, Cal. He was graduated from advanced lying school at Luke field, Phoenix, Ariz. April 24, 1942, receiving his commission at that time.

In July, 1942, he began overseas duty in England, remaining there until the action in North Africa in November.

He was born in Ogden, Jan. 5, 1919, the son of Maye Bower Yates and the late Leo Yates. He is a past master councilor of the Ogden chapter o DeMolay and a Chevalier o the national fraternity and a member o the Presbyterian church. Before his enlistment he was employed in the Ogden office of the Pacific Fruit Express Co.

Others anxiously awaiting further news are two sets o sisters, Mrs. Irene Paxton, 3532 Adams and Mrs. Alta Anderson, of South Gate, Cal., his fiancee Miss Virginia Biddle, 2546 Madison, and his maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.H. over, 1430 Twenty-third.
