Col. Hurray M. Staples Takes Command of Aircraft Group 33

MARINE AIR STATION, EL TORO Marine Colonel Murray M. Staples assumed command of Marine Aircraft Group (MAG)-33 here recently during a change of command ceremony. Col. Staples, formerly wing comptroller, succeeds Col. John H. Scherer who became assistant wing chief of staff G-2 (Intelligence). Col. Staples enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserves in 1942 and was commissioned a second lieutenant later that year. He transferred to the regular Marine Corps in 1945. During World War II Col. Staples served as an artillery officer, and then as a pilot with Marine Fighter Squad ron 311 in Korea. Among the colonel's personal decorations are the Distinguished Flying Cross, four Air Medals and a Purpls Heart. The colonel graduated from University of Missouri in 1939 with a bachelor of arts degree in chemistry. In 1963 he received a bachelor; of science degree in Aero-Engineering from the University of Maryland, Naval Postgraduate School. Col. . Staples, his wife Mary and their four children, Richard, David, Gregory and Mary Sue, live at 1081 Huntridge Rd. He is the son of N. M. Staples of Raytown, Mo.
